I taught English in China for 6 months, and saw a lot of stress with the students and faculty with whom I interacted. When they were met with compassion and encouragement instead of derision or embarrassment, the outcomes improved significantly. I think that was the first time I really saw the effects of positive intervention on people. It was eye opening and sparked my interest in the field. I look at counseling as a way to have people meet themselves with compassion and encouragement in spite of the urge they may feel to self-deprecate.
My own mental well-being is managed by hobbies, peer support, and time outdoors. I am big on awareness and one of the things I tell people is you will find what you are looking for, so look for positive things!
